The projectile shape is the whole story. A round ball has no way to stabilize itself in flight, so a BB gun's accuracy ceiling is inherently lower no matter how good the rifle is. A diabolo pellet's flared skirt and narrow waist let it stabilize aerodynamically and grip a rifled bore, which is why pellet guns are the only one of the three capable of the tight, repeatable groups pest control and hunting require. Airsoft rounds are round too, like BBs, but the sport isn't built around precision at distance — it's built around safe energy levels for tagging a person.

Power and safety: why airsoft is deliberately weak
Airsoft guns are intentionally built to a much lower energy ceiling than pellet guns, because the entire sport depends on being hit by a round that stings but doesn't break skin or cause real injury. That's a feature, not a limitation — it's what makes close-range, player-vs-player play safe. It also means an airsoft gun has no place in pest control or hunting, where you need enough energy to end an animal's life quickly and humanely, not to tag a person safely.
