Squirrel & backyard pest control with airguns

By James · Updated July 24, 2026 · Editorial policy

Quick answer: A quiet .22 PCP delivering 9–12+ FPE at the animal, headshots only, over a safe backstop, in a place where discharge is actually legal. Squirrels are tougher than rabbits — respect the floor. Everything else is detail, covered below.
How this was tested

Field protocol: every load gets a 10-shot chronograph string (average velocity, extreme spread, energy) before it's trusted on game. Holdovers are confirmed at real distances, then re-confirmed in field conditions. Shots are recorded through the scope cam, and claims on this page link to footage where it exists. Legality first — before gear, before anything

Airgun discharge law is hyper-local: state wildlife codes set species, seasons, and legal methods, and city ordinances frequently ban discharging any projectile inside limits regardless of what the state allows. Ground squirrels, tree squirrels, starlings, and rats sit in different legal buckets depending on where you stand. Ten minutes with your city's municipal code and your state's regs is the cheapest gear on this page.

The energy floor — squirrels punch above their weight

Ask anyone who's hunted both: squirrels soak hits that flatten rabbits. Thick hide, dense muscle, absurd will to reach a tree. The working floor is 9–12 FPE delivered at the animal — treat it as a minimum, not a target — and the placement rule is absolute: head, or pass. Verify what your load actually delivers with the FPE calculator and a chronograph; the caliber guide covers why .22 is the sweet spot here.

Field proof — pest control on camera

This is the work the guide describes, filmed through the scope. First, a full pest-control hunt in Mexico with the Impact M4:

Bottom line

Legal ground, quiet shrouded .22 PCP, heavy subsonic domes, 9–12+ FPE on target, headshots, hard backstop. Pest control done right is quiet, undramatic, and effective — save the drama for the rattlesnakes.
