How far can you hunt with an air rifle?
By James · Updated September 24, 2026 · Editorial policy
Field protocol: every load gets a 10-shot chronograph string (average velocity, extreme spread, energy) before it's trusted on game. Holdovers are confirmed at real distances, then re-confirmed in field conditions. Shots are recorded through the scope cam, and claims on this page link to footage where it exists. My honest long-range numbers
I hunt with an FX Impact M4 tuned for 40.1gr slugs at about 950 fps (setup). That's about as capable as .22 airguns get, and here's the reality:
- Good day: hitting tennis-ball-sized targets at 140–150 yards in 8–10 mph wind on a desert hunt.
- Normal day: on a collared dove hunt, 15 shots from about 30 to 130 yards, 5 birds recovered, and the misses clustered at long range.
- Bad day: a rifle that needed a re-zero, and a rangefinder giving hit-or-miss readings.
Social media shows the highlight. On that dove hunt, misses were two-thirds of my shots.
Why long shots go wrong: three error sources
1. Range error
Past 80 yards, a slug is dropping fast, so misjudging the distance by 10 yards moves the impact by inches:
| True distance | You think it's | Drop difference at 950 fps (no drag) | Result on a collared dove |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 yd | 45 yd | ~0.9 in | Still a hit |
| 80 yd | 70 yd | ~2.9 in | Edge of the vital zone |
| 100 yd | 90 yd | ~3.7 in | Miss or wound |
| 120 yd | 110 yd | ~4.4 in | Miss |
| 150 yd | 140 yd | ~5.6 in | Miss |
Computed as gravity drop with no air drag, so it understates real-world error. Drag slows the projectile and makes every number bigger.
2. Velocity spread
If your shots don't leave at the same speed, they don't land at the same height. Ignoring drag, a 40 fps spread at 950 fps shifts impact about 1.7 inches at 100 yards and 2.5 inches at 120. That's why the chronograph and a healthy valve matter more at range. How to fix an inconsistent PCP →
3. Wind
Wind is the one you can't compute away in the field. Light projectiles drift more. Slugs, with higher ballistic coefficients, drift less, which is the main reason I shoot them. If the wind is gusting and switching, the ethical range shrinks. Wind doesn't care about your rifle's price.
The long-range checklist
| Requirement | Minimum I'd accept past 75 yards |
|---|---|
| Energy at the animal | 12+ FPE (chart). Check it at the distance, not the muzzle. |
| Rangefinder | Every shot past 50 yards gets ranged. Cross-check if a reading looks odd. |
| Holdover chart | Confirmed on paper at 10-yard steps out to your max |
| Shot string | Chronographed, with a tight extreme spread |
| Zero | Confirmed that day |
| Wind | Steady and light, or you shorten the shot |
| Position | Prone, bipod, or a solid rest. No offhand long shots. |
| Backstop | Dirt behind the animal. Slugs carry a long way. |
My rule for when to pass
Estimate your worst-case error at that distance: range, wind, and your own wobble. If it's bigger than the vital zone, pass. A collared dove's vital zone is only a couple of inches, so past about 100 yards most of my shots fail that test. Get closer instead. Stalking to 60 yards beats hoping at 130.
Longer shots on a desert hunt in Mexico, ranged at about 100–130 meters, misses included.
FAQ
How far can you hunt with an air rifle?
For most hunters and rifles, 25–50 yards. A tuned, high-power PCP shooting slugs can take small game past 100 yards, but only for a practiced shooter with a rangefinder, a confirmed holdover chart, and calm conditions. Energy at the animal still has to clear about 12 FPE.
What is the effective range of a .22 air rifle for rabbits?
Typically 25–45 yards with pellets from an entry PCP or gas-ram, and 50–75+ yards from a powerful PCP with a proven load. The limit is where you can still hit a golf ball every time from a field position.
How accurate is an air rifle at 100 yards?
A top PCP can group around an inch and a half at 100 yards. Outdoor Life measured 1.53 inches for an FX Impact M4 in .25. Wind and range errors in the field make real hunting accuracy worse than bench groups.
Why do I miss long shots with my air rifle?
Usually range error, wind, or velocity spread. At 950 fps, misjudging 120 yards as 110 changes gravity drop by about 4.4 inches before drag, and a 40 fps velocity spread adds about 2.5 inches at 120 yards. Any one of those can miss a dove's vital zone.
Are slugs better for long-range airgun hunting?
Generally yes. Slugs have higher ballistic coefficients, so they hold speed and resist wind better than pellets. They need a rifle with the power and barrel to stabilize them.
